Shoppers flock to the net on Christmas Day

Shoppers flock to the net on Christmas Day A massive £53 million was spent online in the UK on Christmas Day, as more than 3.5 million turkey-stuffed shoppers took to the web.

This was 770,000 more than attended Anglican church services on the most holy day of the year, according to the Times newspaper, and illustrated the growing trend for people to make purchases using a mouse rather than visiting high street stores.

In fact, many large chains joined in themselves, offering online sales via their websites as they looked to compete with other web-based stores.

The online store of Comet was expecting over 200,000 visitors on the day, while Marks and Spencer said that the first hour of its online sale had been especially busy.

Before Christmas, research from Nielsen Online found that more than four out of five internet shoppers were satisfied with the customer support that they received when doing their holiday shopping this year.
