Survey shows popularity of web among older users

Survey shows popularity of web among older users A new survey indicates that over-55s use the internet more often than any other group in the UK.

The study by Microsoft and Age Concern found that more than four million older people in Britain now own their own computers, with 600,000 more using them at colleges and libraries.

So-called 'silver surfers' generally have more money to spend online - which is great news for internet marketers. The research also shows that the internet is the one place where men are more likely to go shopping than women, and that more than a fifth (22 per cent) buy products online.

Microsoft's director of corporate Marketing, Shaun Orpen, commented: "The results demonstrate the power of technology to enable people. The fact that nearly two-thirds of users say using a PC has had a positive impact on their lives shows that the benefits of technology are not bound by restrictions such as age.

"To think that many people over 50 spend more time at a PC than watching television is a sign that the UK really is moving into the internet generation - and that older people are not excluded from this."
