Tesco to boost online presence
Retail giant Tesco is set to expand its online presence by making 2,000 more product lines available over the internet. The Sunday Times reports that the supermarket will launch a 1,000 page catalogue to support the online expansion, which will be available to customers in Tesco stores.
This latest move builds on a remarkable 2006, during which the company snapped up around half of the new shopping space in Britain.
As well as this, the Christmas period saw Tesco make phenomenal online sales, which rose by a third to £150 million.
Other familiar high street brands such as HMV, Boots and Next suffered in their physical stores but helped to offset this by recording strong web sales - a sign that more and more retailers are looking to capitalise on internet retail.
Tesco itself is looking to boost its online range to around 16,000 different product lines, allowing it to directly compete with leading internet retailer Argos.
Separately, research from TNS Media Intelligence predicts that more will be spent on internet advertising over the coming months.
