Tesco to sell clothing online

Tesco to sell clothing online Supermarket giant Tesco is to begin selling clothes online, building on its existing successful internet store and demonstrating that online retail is clearly the way forward.

Tesco has been planning such a move since last year, and enjoyed blistering sales at Tesco.com over the 2006 Christmas period.

Some 300 lines of women's clothing will be sold, such as its budget Florence & Fred and Cherokee ranges, via the Tesco Direct website, which also sells groceries.

The news is sure to put other online retailers on alert and is likely to be followed by a similar move by rival supermarket Asda.

"Not all our customers have access to our clothing ranges in their local stores and many of them have told us how much they would like to be able to buy Tesco clothing online," said Tesco's head of Marketing for clothing, Sean Murray.

"The best of our clothing ranges will be available through Tesco Direct."

Fiona Moriarty of the Scottish Retail Consortium said the move would help people shop cheaply and efficiently.

Speaking to the Herald, she said: "Retailing is one of the most dynamic industries in the UK. Retailers understand customers. This will undoubtedly be in response to pressure from customers who are increasingly time poor and looking for new ways to access goods quickly and easily."
