US e-commerce tops $30bn in first quarter

US e-commerce tops 30bn in first quarter E-commerce sales in the US amounted to $31.5 billion in the first quarter of this year, according to figures from the Census Bureau of the Department of Commerce.

This represents an increase of 18.4 per cent compared to the same period of 2006, when sales amounted to $26.6 billion. The dramatic increase clearly demonstrates the huge number of online shoppers in the States and indicates the potential market available to internet advertisers.

In all, total retail sales for the quarter came in at $999.5 billion, up by 1.7 per cent from the last quarter of 2006 and an increase of 3.2 per cent year-on-year. E-commerce sales accounted for 3.2 per cent of these.

Internet Retailer notes that eBay sales are not included in the Commerce Department figures - their inclusion would boost the numbers significantly.

The figures were based on the results of the 2005 Annual Retail Trade Survey.

In the UK, meanwhile, shoppers were shown to have spent £100 billion since trading online became possible back in 1995.

Web owners can take advantage of the growing online retail sector using link building.
