Wikia Search to take on Google and Yahoo

Wikia Search to take on Google and Yahoo Further comment has been provided by Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales regarding the possibility of a new search engine to take on the likes of Google and Yahoo.

Back in December last year, it emerged that Wales was considering starting a new search engine to take on the bigwigs. Called Wikiasari, it would be funded by Internet Advertising.

Now a report in the Times has confirmed that this year will see the launch of the new product, although it will be called Wikia Search.

Wales said: "Somebody said to me, your reputation is assured with Wikipedia; this could be a big failure. Why take the risk? But I don't even think in those terms. Search is something lots of people are concerned about and we can make a change."

Wikia Search will be editably by anyone who has sufficient programming knowledge, which Wales believes will take away some of the power from Google and Yahoo. The current situation is "not healthy for democracy", he says.

Another human-powered search engine, Mahalo, has already entered the testing phase, but many critics believe it will not be able to mount a significant challenge.

Wikia Search, on the other hand, has the pedigree of Wikipedia behind it, and could well be a success.
