Woolworths enjoys strong online orders
Woolworths took £10 million of sales via its online presence and its new catalogue, the Independent reports. The high street retailer issued a profit warning in December following slower-than-expected sales but spent £4 million on an online push in order to compete with other internet retailers.
"Woolies" suffered some problems with unforeseen delivery costs, because the average value of online transactions were lower than expected. Also a factor in the extra costs was the sheer size of online order volumes, indicating that the store may concentrate efforts in this area in the future.
"You don't do £10 million of sales on a new concept unless customers like it," said Woolworths' chief executive Trevor Bish-Jones. "We have established a good base on which to build."
The Christmas period was one of increased activity on supermarket group Tesco's website too. The company enjoyed an increase in internet sales of a third, amounting to some £150 million.
All this is good news for those businesses interested in taking advantage of Internet Marketing.
