Yahoo inks deal with newspapers

Internet giant Yahoo is to work together with seven newspaper groups in the United States to share online advertising.

A total of 176 papers spanning 38 states are involved in the tie-up, which will extend Yahoo's local presence and allow the print media to take a larger share of the lucrative online market.

Beginning in December, the deal will involve newspapers owned by groups including Cox Newspapers, Hearst and EW Scripps, with titles including the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and the Dallas Morning News. Financial details of the partnership have not been released.

Initially the publications will post their employment classified ads on HotJobs, Yahoo's own classified site. The idea is that the content of the newspapers will eventually be tagged and optimised for searching by Yahoo.

The news follows the announcement earlier this month that Google would begin selling advertising space in 50 US newspapers, allowing the search engine to extend its profile and give the print media a new source of revenue.

Both deals indicate the growing significance of online advertising and the increasing willingness of the traditional media to become involved.
