Yahoo unveils cloud computing initiative
Yahoo! is to form a partnership with HP and Intel to conduct research into cloud computing.
The scheme will see the three companies work together to advance education and research relating to cloud computing in conjunction with academic institutions including the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany.
Yahoo! research head Prabhakar Raghavan said on the firm's Yodel Anecdotal blog that the project will eventually see academic researchers able to carry out large-scale initiatives on supercomputers without being restricted by software or hardware limitations.
He commented: "The HP/Intel/Yahoo! Cloud Research Testbed is a truly global research effort, and more partners and researchers will be invited to join and participate in the program when all of the systems are up and running later this year."
Earlier this month, Yahoo! announced second quarter revenues of $1.79 billion (£903 million) and profits of $131 million.
