eBay increases Yahoo search ad program
Internet auction site eBay is using more Yahoo search advertising in order to boost buyer activity, according to Reuters. The website's trial of Yahoo ads proved successful, despite fears on the part of eBay traders that incorporating online ads next to auction listings would take traffic away from the site.
eBay has also signed a deal with Google to place search ads on its international sites, although its financial effects will not be felt for some time to come.
"We wouldn't really see any impact until the second half of the year because we are just beginning testing now," eBay chief financial officer Bob Swan told an investor conference.
eBay was founded in 1995 by programmer Pierre Omidyar, although at that time it was known as AuctionWeb.
The first item to be sold was Omidyar's broken laser pointer, which fetched $14.83. Omidyar was surprised that it sold for such a high price but the buyer said "I'm a collector of broken laser pointers", making him realise the potential audience that the internet made available.
Nowadays the benefits of a mass audience are being understood by more and more traders who take advantage of internet advertising.
